How these numbers work
- These are dealers' asking prices from listings live on their own sites, before on-road costs. They are not what cars sold for.
- The model fits the logarithm of the asking price to age, kilometres (on a curve), performance trim and region across 535 listings (R² 0.62). Its fair price is the middle estimate: half of comparable listings ask more, half less. The range is where the middle half of listings sit around the model.
- Above 200,000 km this model runs high: listings there ask around 10 to 16% less than it predicts. Treat a figure up there as a ceiling.
- Regions with fewer than 5 of these cars are priced at the Canterbury level.
- Days listed count from when we saw a car arrive on a dealer's site (within four days) to the first night it was gone, once per car. Leaving a site is not always a sale, and with the ledger only running since 29 Aug 2026, quick departures are over-represented: cars that sit for months have not had time to show up.
- The cheapest list compares each car with tonight's fair price for it, with no more than 2 from any one yard. Cars 60% or more under are left out: that far under, a mis-read price is likelier than a bargain.
